Who and Where We Are
A Joint Photography Exhibition by
Amber Bachiochi Thompson and Joi Bachiochi
Who and Where We Are is a photography exhibition featuring the work of mother and daughter Joi Bachiochi and Amber Bachiochi Thompson. The exhibition highlights themes of identity, responses to grief, and everyday life in rural Oklahoma and spans over 30 years. Joi’s photos from before Amber’s birth, Amber’s self-portraits, and photos that the two took alongside each other at different periods present a generational conversation with subjects, memories, and even compositions echoing across decades. Ultimately, Who and Where We Are offers something not only narratively circular but, especially in regards to the women’s relationship to one another, the possibility of something new.
A slightly different version of this project was pitched at Paseo FEAST in fall 2025, where the show was hinged on four distinct periods of work, categorized chronologically. When gallery space was realized, a few adjustments had to be made to the initial checklist, and it became a better show because of it. Suddenly the curation of it unfolded not simply through chronology but through pairing works that truly spoke to one another.
